Straightening Curly Hair: You're Not Doing it Wrong

Straightening curly hair has seen every side of the beauty world over the past decade. It’s been praised, shamed, celebrated, and condemned. What was once considered the only way to “tame” curly hair has now become something many feel guilty for enjoying.

Let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about straightening curly hair—the real reasons behind it, the cultural and emotional layers, and why there’s no wrong way to wear your hair.

From Straightened Standard to Curly Pride

For a long time, straightening curly hair was seen as the default. It was what was taught in cosmetology schools, what was marketed in media, and what many people (especially people of color) were told was “professional,” “presentable,” or “beautiful.”

As curl education expanded and curly hair communities blossomed, there was a beautiful shift toward embracing natural texture. But with that shift came something else: shame.

Suddenly, straightening curly hair wasn’t just a style—it was seen by the curl community as a betrayal. A rejection of identity. A submission to outdated beauty standards.

Here's the Truth: No Hairstyle Is Wrong

Let me say this loud and clear: There is no wrong way to wear your hair.

If you enjoy how your hair looks, if you feel confident, if it makes you happy—then that’s the right choice. That includes straightening your curls.

I believe everyone should know how to care for and style their hair in its natural state—not because it's the “right” way, but because it’s a powerful tool to have in your styling toolbox. My heart only breaks when I meet someone who has never been shown their curls, who didn’t know they had options, who believed that straight hair was the only answer. That’s where curl education comes in.

But if you know how to care for your curls and still love the look and feel of straightened hair? That’s beautiful too.

There’s No Shame in Enjoying Straight Hair

I’ve had clients whisper to me that they straightened their hair like they’re confessing a secret. I’ve even had clients block me on Instagram so I wouldn’t see a post of them with straight hair.

To that I say: Girlfriend, wear your hair however you want.

I will never be hurt, disappointed, or mad about the way you choose to style your hair. I’m here to support you and your hair journey—whether that journey is curly, straight, or a little bit of both.

If You Wear Your Hair Straight Often, Let’s Talk Cut Strategy

If you’re straightening your hair more than 80% of the time, I recommend aligning with a stylist who specializes in cutting straight hair. It’s not about loyalty—it’s about getting the best results for how you wear your hair the majority of the time. I’m happy to refer you to amazing stylists in my circle who will treat your hair with the same care and respect.

That said, my curly cuts do transfer beautifully to straight hair. So if you straighten occasionally—less than 80% of the time—you are absolutely welcome in my chair. Just let me know how often you straighten so I can tailor your cut accordingly.

Confidence Over Conformity

At the end of the day, there’s no “real” way to be a curly girl. Whether you rock your natural coils daily, straighten for special occasions, or switch it up regularly, your hair journey is valid.

Style your hair in a way that makes you feel radiant. No guilt. No shame. No gatekeeping.
