After putting all your hard work into your curl set, choosing how you seal the deal and complete your routine can have a big impact on your final results. There are three main drying methods to consider: air drying, diffusing, and hood drying. Each method offers different benefits, and the best choice depends on your hair type, styling goals, and lifestyle.
Air Drying
Air drying requires the least amount of effort but takes the longest to fully dry.
Minimal to medium expansion occurs as you move around while your hair is drying.
You may experience unintentional bends or dents if your curls get caught in your clothing or are tucked behind your ears.
This method keeps the hair more condensed, resulting in minimal volume.
If you choose to air dry, ensure your hair is completely dry before going to bed to avoid frizz or disrupted curl patterns.
Diffusing
Diffusing is a quicker alternative to air drying, but it does require patience and a repetitive technique.
Provides the most controlled expansion, making it the best option for enhancing volume.
Seals in products faster and helps solidify your results for a longer-lasting style.
Encourages curls to form more tightly, creating a slightly curlier look than air drying.
Not ideal for those with low porosity hair, as it may not provide the best longevity for the style.
Hood Drying
Hood drying is a great option for a more controlled drying process, typically taking 15-30 minutes for most clients.
Keeps curls in place without encouraging extra curl formation or volume.
Best for those who prefer their curls to remain as they are, rather than becoming curlier or expanding.
Ideal for thicker hair that takes longer to dry, preventing scalp issues caused by prolonged dampness.
A great choice for those who want a more elongated look or are prone to frizz and excessive expansion.
Provides the most longevity for styling, allowing curls to expand gradually over time rather than immediately.
Which Drying Method is Right for You?
There is no right or wrong way to dry your curls—it all depends on your lifestyle and styling goals. Personally, I switch between all three methods depending on my schedule and what I want from my style. If you’re unsure which method to use, consider what your hair needs most and experiment to see which technique works best for you!
